December 14, 2006 Swine Environmental Management Meeting Set for Jan. 11-12 Current challenges and future strategies for the environmental management of swine are topics of a two-day meeting on Jan. 11-12. The meeting will be held at the Governor’s Inn, Casselton. The event is sponsored by the North Dakota State University Extension Service, North Dakota Pork Council and National Pork Board. These educational sessions are designed for swine and dairy operators, as well as state and local policymakers who write ordinances dealing with animal feeding operations. The meeting begins on Jan. 11 with a welcome at 10 a.m. The first session begins at 10:15 a.m. with a presentation on North Dakota odor and animal feeding operation rules by Karl Rockeman, North Dakota Department of Health. At 11 a.m., Larry Jacobson, University of Minnesota Extension Service, will discuss odor management. The afternoon session starts at 1 p.m. with a Pennsylvania perspective on odor regulation development by Robb Meinen, Pennsylvania State University. Best management practices for swine feeding and nutrient management will be discussed at 1:45 p.m. by John Dhuyvetter, Ron Wiederholt, Teresa Dvorak and others from the NDSU Extension Service. At 2:15 p.m., Todd Erickson, North Dakota Pig Cooperative, and Nicole Boettger, National Pork Council, will lead a discussion on cultivating neighbor relations. A presentation on swine manure application and management lead by Jerry Loxtercamp, Jerry’s Pumping Service, Villard, Minn., will begin at 3 p.m. Wrapping up the day at 3:45 p.m. is a question-and-answer session led by the morning speakers. Starting the day on Jan. 12 is a presentation on the development and design of swine manure digesters by Mark Moser, RCM Digesters, Berkeley, Calif. Meinen will follow with a swine digester case study. Chuck Fleming, North Dakota Department of Agriculture; Bill Huether, North Dakota Department of Commerce; and Ron Rebenich, Basin Electric Cooperative, will discuss the state of manure digesters in North Dakota starting at 10:15 a.m. At 11:15 a.m., Bridget Whitney and Steve Jones, Conestoga Rovers and Associates, will do a presentation titled “Bringing It All Together: Who Can Help.” The two-day event finishes at noon with final comments.
