December 21, 2006 “Charlotte’s Web” Ticket Purchases Support North Dakota 4-H Theatergoers will see 4-H clovers in the new movie version of “Charlotte's Web.” The film reinforces values taught in 4-H youth development and provides an opportunity for the public to contribute to the program. For every theater ticket purchased at www.fourhcouncil.edu to see “Charlotte’s Web,” Hollywood Movie Money will donate $1 to support North Dakota’s 4-H Youth Development program. “‘Charlotte’s Web’ is a classic story of dedication, friendship and loyalty. Those same values are carried out in 4-H youth development,” said Brad Cogdill, North Dakota Center for 4-H Youth Development chair. “In the movie, Fern uses her head, heart, hands and health to encourage family and friends to save Wilbur from the smokehouse. With help from Wilbur’s barn friends, especially Charlotte, Fern’s dream comes true when she is able to take Wilbur to the 4-H fair. Fern wears her 4-H T-shirt, and the movie features the 4-H emblem several times. “However, youth and adults need to understand that today’s 4-H is much more than only livestock projects,” Cogdill said. “It has evolved from a program that traditionally served rural youth to one that serves the needs of all youth, no matter where they live. Youth in today’s 4-H program learn life skills through many other projects, such as rocketry, computer science, nutrition, citizenship and photography. Studies also show that youth who participate in 4-H do better in school, are more motivated to help others and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors.” Tom McSparron, North Dakota 4-H Foundation director, said, “Purchasing ‘Charlotte’s Web’ tickets online is just one of the many ways North Dakotans can support 4-H youth development programs in the state. Contributions to 4-H are used to support youth with curriculum, educational programming, awards and more.” At www.fourhcouncil.edu, purchasers enter their ZIP codes to see the discounted adult, child and senior ticket prices. There is $2 per ticket handling and processing fee, but with the discount, the price is about the same as if purchased at the theater, and the purchase supports the North Dakota 4-H program, McSparron said. Buyers may choose to make an additional tax-deductible donation to 4-H online. Tickets aren’t for specific showings, but they expire Jan. 31. “Charlotte’s Web” stars Dakota Fanning as Fern and features the voices of 4-H alumni Julia Roberts and Reba McEntire, and many other well-known actors. The movie is produced by Paramount Pictures and Walden Media. At www.walden.com, teachers and leaders may download an educators guide and ideas for reviewing the book, storytelling, acting and other activities. ### Editor: Becky
