Submitted by: agcomm, Thu Dec 11 09:42:28 1997 December 11,1997 Western Dakota Crops Day to Feature Alternative Crops, Dec. 18 The Western Dakota Crops Day, sponsored by North Dakota State University's Hettinger and Dickinson research extension centers, will feature alternative crop production and marketing strategies, as well as global positioning satellite technology for today's farmer. The one-day presentation is free, and begins at 9 a.m., MST, on Thursday, Dec. 18, at the Hettinger Armory in Hettinger, N.D. Steve Edwardson, crop management specialist with Minn-Dak Growers Ltd. of Grand Forks, will discuss marketing strategies, contracts and market trends for alternative crops such as buckwheat, canola, sunflowers and crambe. Eric Eriksmoen, research agronomist at the Hettinger Research Extension Center, will discuss results of research being conducted on more than 40 crops that might be adapted to southwestern North Dakota. Pat Carr, Dickinson Research Extension Center agronomist, will present results of research on integrating various alternative crops into dryland cropping systems. Carl and Janice Mattson, wheat farmers at Chester, Mont., will present an update on how farmers can use global positioning satellite technology.
