New Labels, Label Additions Tachigaren Registered on Sugarbeet Tachigaren fungicide was registered on August 4. This is a new chemistry, previously not available in the United States. Tachigaren has been used on sugarbeet for many years in Europe and Japan. At low rates it provides control of Pythium seedling disease and at high rates it provides early season control of Aphanomyces seedling disease and root rot. It does not provide full season control, however. Specialty varieties that have Aphanomyces tolerance do not express this tolerance in the seedling stage. The combination of Tachigaren and a tolerant variety is most likely to provide season-long suppression in areas where Aphanomyces is a common problem. Aphanomyces is favored by warm and wet soils. It has been a severe problem in southern Minnesota and in some fields in the southern Red River Valley. The prevalence of Aphanomyces has been greater this year in the Red River Valley than in most other years. Tachigaren treated sugarbeet seed will be available for the 1996 growing season as pelleted seed.
