Weed Control Products in the Future The EPA has granted a label for Roundup on Roundup tolerant soybean (Roundup Ready Soybeans). This will affect weed control strategies used because of the economics of Roundup and both annual and perennial weed control as compared to other herbicide programs. It may take a few years to develop Roundup tolerant soybean varieties tolerant to Roundup which fit our growing season. USDA has given approval of a genetically engineered corn that is tolerant of Liberty (glufosinate) herbicide. Glufosinate is a non selective, non residual herbicide with limited systemic activity. The corn variety was produced by AgrEvo and is the first herbicide tolerant corn to be cleared. Other crops that are undergoing genetic alteration to confer tolerance to other herbicides include: corn, soybean, canola, wheat, sugarbeet, and others.
