There will be some changes in the North Dakota Pesticide Certification Program because of legislation that was passed in the 1997 North Dakota legislative session. Please read the first article in the LAW section.

Well Done

I would like to thank everyone who was involved in moving and protecting pesticides and fertilizers from the 1997 flood. I would especially like to recognize the NDSU Extension Agents from the northeastern counties for their hard work, good judgement, care, and quick action which resulted in saving the pesticides and fertilizer and minimizing any health or environmental risk that could have occurred. Well done.

Waste Pesticide Disposal Update

Thanks also to those of you who helped with the publicizing of the special flood-damaged pesticide collections in the Red River Valley. A total of 90,713 pounds of waste or flood damaged pesticides was collected.

There were 142 individuals who brought 19,402 pounds of waste pesticides to the eight western North Dakota collection sites in June. The total amount of waste pesticides collected and disposed of since 1992 is over 230 tons.

A Central North Dakota Collection Program is scheduled for July 21-25

See following information for details.

RECYCLE YOUR Containers

Many thanks to Ostlund Chemical Company, West Chem Agricultural Chemicals Inc., and Cenex/Land O' Lakes for again conducting a collection and recycling program for properly rinsed plastic pesticide containers in North Dakota. Please promote and participate in the program. The schedule is located in this.

Certified?

Someone you know did not receive this issue of the North Dakota Pesticide Quarterly because their certification card expired on April 1, 1997. If that was one of your employees, then any application of restricted use pesticides by them is in violation of the law. Some people did not complete the requirements for recertification and have dropped out of the system. Please make sure that your employees are properly certified.

Also take a peek at your certification card to see if you need to be recertified for the 1998 season. I know it is early, but you have much to do and much to remember. If the number in the box next to the category you are certified in is 98, your certification will expire on April 1, 1998. You will need to plan to get recertified this next training season. Please contact the NDSU Pesticide Programs Office if you have questions.

How is Your Season Really Going?

Now that you are more than half way through the 1997 season it is time to quickly review your operation. Are you achieving the results you're looking for? Are profits up and costs down?

Is your professionalism showing? Do you have what it takes to succeed in this business?

Its easy to spot a successful operation. Service is the first priority. Much attention is paid to details. Equipment is maintained. Safety is important. The operation is organized and clean.

How does your operation rate? What do your customers and neighbors see when they look at your operation? Do they see a business that places a high priority on safety and protecting the environment? Do they see a good neighbor? One who cares?

If you or your business are trustworthy, there will be fewer complaints and better public relations.

Best wishes for the 1997 Season.
Greg Dahl

Recycle Plastic Containers

How do you plan to dispose of your empty pesticide containers? If you are using returnable containers I applaud you. That is a great way to minimize the pesticide container disposal problem. If you're not please consider recycling. IT IS ILLEGAL FOR COMMERCIAL APPLICATORS TO BURN EMPTY PESTICIDE CONTAINERS. Leaving the containers for your customers to dispose of is certainly not customer friendly and just passes the problem along. Taking properly rinsed containers to an approved landfill is a legal solution, but recycling makes more sense. Ostlund Chemical Company, West Chem Agricultural Chemicals, Inc., and Cenex/Land O' Lakes are collecting and recycling properly rinsed plastic pesticide containers.

Plastic containers should be triple rinsed, pressure rinsed, and inspected to be free from visible pesticide residues. The labels and caps need to be removed.

The schedule of dates, times, and locations for the Ostlund and West Chem collections is:
