Why do I have an academic adviser?

A successful college experience often involves a good working relationship with a faculty member who serves as your academic adviser. Our faculty recognize the importance of advising and are committed to this role.

Each student is assigned an adviser to ensure you get the most out of your four years at NDSU. Students are urged to get to know their adviser and to call on him or her, not only when selecting courses, but also for information about careers, scholarships, internships, and understanding the university's rules and requirements.

Students often need to submit letters of recommendation for scholarships or job applications, and an adviser is an excellent resource for such letters. Advisers can prepare more effective recommendations if they know you well.

You may find yourself in need of someone to listen, who cares, who can provide guidance, and who can help find appropriate support or resources. Your adviser can be that confidant. It is not uncommon for an advising relationship to be the foundation for a life-time professional relationship.

For more information about the role of advisers, visit the College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources Academic Advising resource.
