Internet Access Costs

ISP costsMost Internet providers offer different plans for light and heavy users. Costs range from $2 - $3 per hour to a flat rate of $20 - $30 per month. Although many services now provide unlimited access for a flat rate, be wary. A high number of users may clog the lines and result in endless busy signals. If you can never get connected, the unlimited access doesn't do you much good. Try calling the number during the times you most expect to be using the Internet. Regular busy signals may mean you will have trouble getting online. If possible, also check with current users about their experiences with the provider.

One of the most important things to consider when choosing an Internet provider are phone charges. Ideally, the phone number your modem uses to connect to the Internet should be a local call. If it is a long distance call, you will be charged long distance rates for the entire time you are connected.

If you travel often and plan to access the Internet, consider a national ISP or a service that offers an 800 number. The higher cost these services charge may be worth the money you will save on long distance phone charges. There are national and local providers who have toll-free phone numbers in most communities.
