Uses of the
Internet
The Internet makes it possible to communicate and share information in a number of ways. Two
of the most popular uses of the Internet are electronic mail and the World Wide Web.
- Electronic mail and mailing lists. Electronic mail (email) is
similar to its paper-based counterpart. With email you can exchange messages with anyone on
the Internet. All you need to know is the person's email address. Electronic mailing lists are a
popular way to use email in order to correspond with groups of people that share similar
interests.
- The World Wide Web (Web) is a popular way to access information
resources on the Internet. Documents (also called "pages") created for the Web can
be formatted with text, graphics, sound clips, and video segments.
- Other uses of the Internet, such as File transfer
Protocol (FTP), Telnet, and Internet Relay
Chat (IRC) make it possible to download software, login to other computers, and
"talk" with other Internet users located around the world.
