How Do I Search the Web?

With millions of pages on the Web, finding information that fits our needs can be a frustrating experience. Previously in this section, we describe a number of popular tools for finding information on the Web. Here we explain some of the search strategies for using these tools to their fullest potential.

These search strategies—keyword searching, phrase searching, boolean searching, field searching, and wildcard searching—are pretty common across search tools.

Be sure to read the "Help" or "Tips" pages provided by each search tool to see how these strategies are implemented.
