Blocking Software The Web gives children access to a wonderful world of information, but parents and teachers are rightfully concerned about allowing unlimited Internet access. Ideally, adults would always be present when children are using the Web, but most find that practically unfeasible. One strategy to help keep children from visiting inappropriate sites is to use some type of blocking or filtering software. Blocking software may:
Typically, filtering applications are installed on an individual's computer. Others are available as server applications and are featured by Internet Service Providers. Some major web sites, like AltaVista also include filtering options on their search pages. Many sites offer information and reviews of various blocking applications. One is NetParents http://www.netparents.org, which offers links to several blocking product sites and other online resources to help educate parents. Blocking software can also be obtained from major download sites like Tucows http://www.tucows.com.
