Extension Program Council

PRESENT: Becky Koch, Mike Hanson, Brad Cogdill, Margaret Tweten, Kathy Tweeten, Gerald Sturn, Rachelle Vettern, Debb Pankow, Sean Brotherson, Jane Edwards, Duane Berglund, Julie Garden-Robinson, Dean Aakre, Greg Lardy, Duane Hauck and Roger Haugen
Roger handed out the revised State Plan of Work sheets with the program areas listed that we use as a marketing tool. All eight program areas have also been revised.
Roger then discussed the information he learned at the North Central meeting last month. The emerging issues for ag include:
Biosecurity
Nutrient management
Renewable energy
Water supply/security
Urban landscape
Logic models for the five states are going to be developed by the program leaders to cover these areas. North Dakota already is working on several of these issues so we are ahead of the game.
Duane then discussed family and consumer science issues:
Food Safety
Family financial education
Child care
Parenting
Successful aging
Program areas were identified by relevance on entire region. Uniform impact needed to increase federal reporting.
Kathy discussed the Community Resource development issues:
Participatory community planning and development
Leadership development
Community economic development
These are three areas we already are working on.
Brad discussed the 4-H Youth Development
Healthy lifestyles
Science and technology
Youth citizenship
These also are areas that are close to our program areas.
Discussion on expanding 4-H clubs. There is a lot of competition for activities for youth so we need to think about how a club is packaged. The reporting system for 4-H (ES37) will be changing.
Fall conference update
Discussion on length of conference and it was thought that only the two main program areas should meet for the half day pre-conference.
Support staff conference will be April 26-28 in Bismarck.
Team Reports:
Dean Aakre shared that with 52 counties in it shows that 4-H is down 1,000 which is significant. There is an increase in clubs because of military clubs and afterschool clubs. November 1 is the deadline. Burleigh County has a judging contest in Louisville. Four other teams are going to Denver. State Fair meeting is November 16.
Duane Berglund passed out some upcoming dates for ag meetings. Winter meeting are being scheduled along with pesticide training workshops and commodity group annual meetings. It was asked if these dates were on our extension calendar. Duane said some might be but most probably were not. Melanie indicated she would put them on the calendar for him.
Area agronomists will be getting information from the MPUs for program planning at spring conference. 8-12 people will then form a task force to put together plan in June.
Biotech conference was successful. Over 130 people attended. All presentations are now up on the NDSU biotech web site.
ASA/SSSA meetings are going on in Salt Lake City.
Wheat schools are being planned by Joel Ransom, area agronomists and Grain Growers in ND and Minnesota.
Pest management and crop scouting schools are being planned for February and March.
Sean Brotherson then reported about the national extension task force on marriage education. In Illinois in Sept. a model will be developed. There will be a meeting next week in Phoenix.
The web site will be updated soon.
Parent education survey draft will come out in the next 7-10 days.
The CD Father Times newsletter is being translated into Spanish. There was a grant from HeadStart to pay for this.
Development assessment tool in Headstart presented findings. Individual reports are looking good.
Standing Rock issues were discussed. Home on the Range newsletters on families separated by war or otherwise.
Child and adolescent wellbeing issues are bullies, hazing and others.
Another literacy development is each well child care visit patient will receive a book. Katrina has brought requests for flood issues.
Greg Lardy informed the group that the Beef 101 meeting was held in Sept. and Oct. in central ND.
Karl Hoppe was involved in feedlot meeting.
Bovine Connection meeting in Sidney, MT on Dec. 1-2.
Value Added summit in Mandan on Jan. 11-12.
John Dhuyvetter will be working on swine projects. It will definitely be more than 25% of his position.
They are working on refilling the sheep position. Interviews will take place in late November or early December.
The beef systems project has private partner ND Beef and a joint venture with ND American Bison Cooperative raising 3 – 4 million.
Debb Pankow discussed the saving for education inactive consumer website, long term care, funeral planning web site and bankruptcy publication.
Monthly calls are scheduled with Sean and Debb combined.
Annie’s Project (farm business management for women) are at four sites in Minnesota and six sites in North Dakota. This is heavily funded by grants.
Kathy Tweeten reported on the Rural America Competing in the New Economy scheduled for Nov. 10, 2005.
Julie and Sean are working on emerging issues with new population and energy. Cultural arts have four pilot counties. Tom Isern is working on this. Two counties in Walhalla and Ellendale have met. A one-day workshop will take place this spring. Other counties are in Ashley and Cooperstown.
Rural Leadership North Dakota had graduation and a two-day orientation.
Horizons is going through the second round. There is high hopes that it will continue.
Jodi Bruns will attend national training on youth engagement and youth development.
There will be a one-day workshop in Watford City and Oakes on poverty reduction.

Healthy Weight:
Developed a website for the USDA – Local School Wellness Policy: Community Engagement
Survey related to nutrition and physical activity for all 6th grade students in FPS was conducted last spring.
Presented a poster entitled “Youth Risk Behaviors Survey: Trends for Nutrition and Physical Acticity Behaviors within a Midwest City School District”
Develop web-based methodology to determine impact of walking programs.
Agriculture to Health:
Marketed the “Beans: Agriculture to Health” in St. Louis.
Future plans to develop health benefits of whole grains
Diabetes Education
Pilots for “Dining with Diabetes: North Dakota Style!” have been initiated in 3 out of 4 counties.
Dietetic student developing diabetes education website.
Sports Nutrition:
Working with coaches association and HNES training program to conduct a survey of coaches relating to sports nutrition.
Colorectal cancer prevention/screening education:
Grant proposal submitted to Dakota Medical Foundation.
Provided training at fall conference and working on lesson development.
Julie Garden-Robinson provided the group with a poster of the NDSU athletes promoting nutrition. “Eat Smart – Play Hard” collaboration with Bison Athletics.
5 Plus 5 communities – 20 communities have been recognized which is ¾ of ND population.
Banking on Strong Bones – 12 counties and 1100 children in grades 4-5 are participating in project sponsored by Midwest Dairy Council.
Healthy ND 4-H Clubs – this program encourages clubs to feature a nutrition or fitness topic or activity during club meetings.
Food entrepreneurship – modules are being created on the topics of food safety for temporary food stands, marketing and pricing.
Food safety – ND Governor’s school was featured in a video on safe food handling which was recently provided to county staff.
Teens Serving Food Safely – curriculum is across the state. About 2,000 food safety kits were distributed this fall.
Refugee/new American Food Safety Project. Cass/Clay counties are now underway and will involve development of multilingual food safety education materials.
Duane Hauck asked that everyone let him know about collaborations...like the one Kathy has with Tom Isern. He has some funding to support these efforts. He encouraged staff to look for and initiate these.
