About Dr. Wachenheim:
Cheryl Wachenheim is an Associate Professor in the Department
of Agribusiness and Applied Economics at North Dakota State University
(NDSU) in Fargo. She received her M.B.A. and her doctorate in
Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University, and taught
at Illinois State University from 1993 until joining NDSU in
1998. She teaches undergraduate courses in agrisales, commodity
marketing, and macro- and micro-economics and team teaches a
graduate course in strategic marketing and management.
Cheryl’s research interests focus broadly on stakeholder assessment and the livestock industry. Questions of stakeholder assessment range from surveying students about effectiveness of tools in an online course to estimating consumer willingness to pay for a high-selenium North Dakota beef product. The process of collecting feedback from stakeholders (students, consumers, interest groups), and using this information to form recommendations for individuals, firms, and organizations is an area of considerable interest. Cheryl has been working on research related to the livestock industry since her undergraduate days in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Minnesota. In graduate school, her research focused on the economic viability of grazing systems for beef stockers and of feeding and housing systems for feedlot cattle. This line of research has persevered, and she continues to assess the economic viability of livestock farm techniques, equipment, and systems. With a graduate student, she is currently considering stakeholder decision making regarding animal welfare related procedures in animal husbandry.
Cheryl enjoys university and community
service. She is currently the chair of University Program Review
and of the Board of Directors of Northland Educator’s Federal Credit Union. She co-advises NDSU Collegiate Farm Bureau, and is a medical logistician in the Minnesota Army National Guard.
