2020 Browse the Pasture Walk

Ward County will be hosting the 2020 Browse the Pasture Walk on July 14, 2020 at 9 a.m. NDSU Extension Livestock Environmental Stewardship Specialist, Miranda Meehan and NDSU Extension Range Specialist, Kevin Sedivec, join NDSU Extension Intern, Aspen Lenning and NDSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent, Paige Brummund, for this year’s Pasture Walk. Topics, such as carrying capacity, identifying common types of valuable plants, and grazing management will be discussed in an interactive manner, as well as plenty of time for questions – bring your curiosity. The walk will take place in a pasture near Minot, ND, so real-world examples can be discussed.

An engaging two-part distance learning program starting with the BBQ Junior Grill Masters Bootcamp, where youth will learn about grilling, knife, and food safety. State 4-H Consumer Decision Making Contest

The State 4-H Consumer Decision Making Contest is right around the corner! Registration is due to the Center for 4-H by Friday, July 10.

The contest will be held on Tuesday, July 21. Each county Extension office will host its own participants in a location suitable to allow for social distancing following Phase II Guidance.

CC616 4-H Consumer Decision Making is a good resource for training your youth.

Registration forms (Junior & Senior) and all other details and rules can be found on the Center for 4-H website. Please take time to review all of the guidelines carefully! They are also attached.

The 4-H Consumer Decision Making committee has created detailed instructions, including a sample schedule for counties, in hopes of making sure things run smoothly. Please read everything thoroughly!

State 4-H Project Expo Virtual

The COVID cancellations of our State Fair may have some youth wishing they could still find a way to showcase their projects from the 4-H year.

For those youth, we are offering Project Expo virtually!

The event will be held on July 27 and 28, with awards of excellence, announced on Wednesday the 29 at 9 am Central time.

Youth that wish to participate in this event should sign up for a 20-minute time slot. The registration will ask for two pictures. One should be a picture of only the presentation board, and the other a picture of the youth with the board. When taking these pictures, make sure to show the whole board with little background to highlight the board best.

Once registrations are complete, youth will be sent information on how to connect during their time and details for the event. Once logged onto Zoom, youth will stand with their presentation board and answer questions posed by judges about what they learned by participating in this project.

Registration will close on July 22.

We hope youth that need this closure for projects will join us on July 27 or 28 for a fun virtual Project Expo!

National 4-H Conference is a week long program held at the National 4-H Center, Chevy Chase, MD in March/April. It is a future-focused program that aims to build strong leaders through round-table discussions, team-building activities, group assemblies and visits with national legislators.

State Rube Goldberg Contest

The 2020 North Dakota State Fair is canceled but that doesn’t mean we have to cancel the state Rube Goldberg contest!

The state Rube Goldberg contest will be held virtually August 3rd-14th. The same rule book will be used and teams will interact virtually while building their machines through an application called Goose Chase. Videos of the machines will be posted to YouTube by August 14th, and judges will judge the machine, the team journal and team presentation. A watch party and awards will be done through Zoom after the judges judge all the machines. Registration for the contest is now open and will close on July 24th. More details will be sent after registration closes but you don’t have to wait until August to start building your machine. The rule book, Rube Goldberg activities and a video detailing the contest are all posted at the website below.

State 4-H Land Judging Contest

The State 4-H and FFA Land Evaluation Contest is open to all youth 8-18 years old. It is important for contestants to be competent in three skills; texturing, estimating slope, and determining the depth of surface and subsurface horizons.

The four age divisions are:

Junior 4-H Division – must be enrolled in 4-H in the county you represent and be age 8-13 on September 1st (13 year olds may judge in either 4-H division).

Senior 4-H Division – must be enrolled in 4-H in the county you represent and be age 13-18 on September 1st (13 year-olds may judge in either 4-H division).

FFA Division.

Open division for youth 8-18 and not eligible for one of the other divisions.

4-H team scores will be determined from the top three individual scores from a county team. There is no limit as to number of participants a county may enter. Up to 3 counties may join to make a team provided that none of the counties involved have 3 or more members in that age division.
