State 4-H/FFA Land Judging Contest
The state 4-H land judging contest is held in conjunction with FFA on the first Thursday in August. Site varies each year and will be in Harvey this year hosted by the Harvey FFA. Dr. Franzen and Chris Augustin prepare practice sites – available for the day prior and morning of the contest.

Youth field day at the Absaraka Horticulture Research Farm
The field day will provide demonstrations and hands-on activities focused on horticultural plant identification and the basics of plant growth and pollinators. Potential activities may include tree identification, tree pruning and planting demonstrations, a drone demonstration, tours of the high tunnel, hydroponic salad table demonstration, plant propagation exercises, pollinator lessons and observations, tour of NDSU fruit research, weed identification, and organic production.

Northwest ND Compost Demo Day
Crop and livestock producers, Natural Resources Conservation Service and Soil Conservation District boards and staff, and others interested in composting will have an opportunity to learn more about it during the Northwest Manure Compost Demo Day that North Dakota State University’s Carrington Research Extension Center is hosting Aug. 7 near Carpio, N.D.
The event runs from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Bloms Land & Cattle LLC. The site is northeast of Carpio at 7470 42nd Ave. N.W. Watch for NDSU signs. No registration is required.
Topics that will be covered are:
Turning manure into compost
Differences between manure and compost
Using compost in a cropping system
The event also will include a compost turner demonstration and question-and-answer session.

Stepping On is a program that has been researched and proven to reduce falls in older people.
It consists of a workshop that meets for two hours a week for seven weeks. Workshops are led by Bev Voller, Emmons County Public Health and Acacia Stuckle, NDSU Extension-Emmons County. In addition, local guest experts provide information on exercise, vision, safety, and medications.
The program runs from August 26 – October 7, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Linton Senior Center.
